Background and distribution

Müller-Thurgau was developed in Switzerland in the late 1800th century by Hermann Müller from the canton of Thurgau – hence the name. It was a cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royale and quickly became popular in Germany for its reliability and mild style. Today, the grape is grown mainly in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic – but also in some places in Denmark.

Light and friendly in style

Müller-Thurgau wines are generally light in body, low in alcohol and aromatic without being overpowering. They work well as an aperitif, with lunch dishes or in the green kitchen – and are particularly suitable for serving by the glass in professional settings.

Flavor profile

Typical tasting notes of Müller-Thurgau include:

  • White flowers (jasmine, linden blossom)
  • Green apples and pears
  • Nutmeg, citrus and slightly herbal nuances

The acidity is mild to moderate, making the wine round and welcoming. It is rarely perceived as sharp or tart, making it easy to drink – even for guests who do not normally prefer white wines with high acidity.

Freshness without a dish

Most Müller-Thurgau wines are aged in steel tanks to preserve their freshness and aromatic qualities. The wine is best enjoyed young and fresh – and it is best served at 8–10 °C, possibly from the barrel.
