Grenache – also known as Garnacha – is one of the world's most widespread grape varieties and a true sun-ripened classic. At Vinhanen We work with Grenache wines that express both the soft fruitiness and the spicy warmth that make the grape ideal for restaurants, bars and gastronomic concepts. It is available in red, white and rosé versions – but it is the red Grenache Noir that has really won the hearts of wine lovers with its ripe berry tones, slightly herbal character and welcoming style.
Grenache probably originated in Aragon in northeastern Spain, where it still goes by the name Garnacha. In France, the grape is particularly widespread in the Rhône and Languedoc-Roussillon, where it is included in some of the most popular blends – often together with Syrah, Carignan or Mourvèdre. Grenache thrives best in warm, dry climates and has therefore spread throughout the Mediterranean region as well as overseas regions such as California and Australia.
Grenache is often used as the backbone of southern French and Spanish blends, but it also stands strong on its own. It has relatively thin skins, which gives wines with low to moderate tannin content and is often lighter in color than many other red wines. The alcohol content can be high, especially when the grape ripens in hot climates - here it produces full-bodied and powerful wines with warmth and spice.
Grenache is a grape with great versatility. Typical flavor notes include ripe red fruits such as strawberries, raspberries and cherries – often backed by herbs such as thyme and lavender, as well as spicy elements such as pepper and licorice. The wines are generally soft and fruity in structure with low to moderate acidity, and with a warmth in the finish, making them perfect for both winter dishes and sunny outdoor dining.
Grenache wines range from light and bright to darker, more powerful expressions, depending on yield, terroir and the winemaker's approach. In blends, Grenache provides softness, fruit and alcohol – and acts as a counterbalance to more austere grapes such as Syrah and Mourvèdre.
Grenache is also widely used for rosé wines – especially in Provence and the south of France. Its light colour and juicy fruit make it ideal for fresh, dry rosés with gastronomic potential. At Vinhanen You will also find some orange and peel contact wines with Grenache Blanc as a base.

Yes – they are two names for the same grape variety. “Garnacha” is used in Spain, while “Grenache” is the French name. They are often used in slightly different styles depending on terroir and vinification.
Not necessarily. Grenache ranges from light and juicy to powerful and concentrated depending on the style and region. What they all have in common, however, is a generous fruitiness and relatively soft structure.
Yes, Grenache is very well suited to barrel aging systems. Its aromatic strength and fruit profile hold up well over time, and low tannin ensures that it tastes good both as a first and last glass.
Serve Grenache at approximately 16–18 °C. Lighter versions and rosés can be served slightly cooler. Decanting is rarely necessary, but can be used for fuller versions.
