Pinot Gris

Grauburgunder is the German name for Pinot Gris and offers a unique combination of fullness, freshness and food-friendliness. At Vinhanen ApS, we have been working with organic and climate-friendly wines since 2013, and Grauburgunder is a permanent part of our range for restaurants, bars and professional kitchens. Our wines come from selected German winegrowers with a focus on sustainability and minimal intervention, and they are primarily delivered in Keykegs, which ensures optimal quality and low waste. Grauburgunder is a fantastic all-round wine with enough body to match complex dishes, and at the same time a freshness and slightly spicy profile that makes it easy to sell by the glass. If you are looking for a white wine with gastronomic scope and organic quality, Grauburgunder is an obvious choice.

Grauburgunder – Pinot Gris with German precision

Although Grauburgunder is genetically identical to Pinot gris, German versions often have a drier, mineral and more austere style. This makes them particularly suitable for food pairings and gastronomic use. The best examples come from regions such as Baden, Palatinate and Rheinhessen, where the combination of cool climate and chalky soil creates elegant and precise wines.

Flavor profile and style

Grauburgunder typically offers notes of pear, ripe citrus, quince and herbs – often with a slightly spicy or nutty finish. The wine has a medium body, clear acidity and often a dry finish, making it very versatile with both green and white meat dishes.

Sustainable German producers

Vinhanen collaborates with German winemakers who grow Grauburgunder organically and work with a focus on soil, terroir and the wine's natural expression. Many of our wines are unfiltered and spontaneously fermented, which gives extra depth and authenticity in the glass. Our partner Johanninger is a good example of this approach.

Keykegs – quality and climate in focus

Our cask wines i Keykegs gives you a more sustainable solution with low wine waste and longer shelf life. For restaurants and bars, this means that Grauburgunder can be served at the perfect temperature, glass after glass, without oxidation – and with great flexibility.

That's why Grauburgunder is ideal for professionals

Grauburgunder is an excellent wine for both glass and bottle serving. It combines complexity with accessibility, and is a perfect match for modern Nordic cuisine. Compared to other white grapes such as Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc, Grauburgunder offers a creamier texture and a more rounded fruit, without losing its freshness. For many guests, it is a wine that both surprises and satisfies. We are happy to advise on how to integrate it into your wine list – either as the house white wine, or as part of a seasonal menu. Grauburgunder and food – balance and depth

Grauburgunder is an obvious choice when you are looking for a white wine with a little more depth than the very light types – without going over into the heavy, barrel-aged styles.

Wine for mushrooms and creamy vegetable dishes

Grauburgunder pairs wonderfully with mushrooms, pasta dishes with cream or butter, baked celery, cauliflower and Jerusalem artichokes. The wine's fullness and subtle spice play nicely with the umami and fattiness of the dish.

Wine for poultry and pigs

Roast chicken, turkey and light pork with herb and mustard-based sauces find a harmonious partner in Grauburgunder. The acidity lifts the dish, while the structure matches the protein and accompaniments.

Wine for fish and seafood

Fatty fish such as salmon and cod with beurre blanc, butter-fried spiny lobsters or fish with grilled vegetables are elegantly matched by Grauburgunder's combination of freshness and fullness.

Yes – it’s the same grape. “Grauburgunder” is the German name for Pinot Gris. However, the German style is typically dry, more acidic and less aromatic than, for example, Pinot Gris from Alsace. It is therefore particularly suitable for gastronomy.

Best served at 9–11 °C. Too cool a temperature will dull the fruit, while too warm a temperature can take away the wine's elasticity. With Keykegs, it's easy to control the temperature precisely and consistently.

It is particularly well suited to dishes with mushrooms, butter, roasted vegetables, poultry and fish with creamy sauces. It also works well with cheeses and vegetarian dishes with umami. Grauburgunder is versatile and food-friendly.

Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) is typically lighter and more citrusy, while Grauburgunder has more body, spicy fruit and structure. Grauburgunder is more suitable for dishes with fattiness and complexity.

Because you get organic, food-friendly wine in sustainable packaging. Our Grauburgunder is carefully selected for professional use – with a long shelf life, low waste and maximum freshness. We offer advice, tastings and ongoing support for your wine list.
