Gamay is the grape behind the lively, fruity and light red wines, which are especially known from Beaujolais. At Vinhanen you will find carefully selected Gamay wines that combine freshness and fruit with gastronomic versatility – perfect for restaurants and bars that want an elegant wine with broad appeal.
Originating in southern Burgundy, Gamay was historically displaced from the Côte d'Or to Beaujolais, where it has found its natural home. Today, Gamay is also grown in the Loire and other cooler regions, where the grape thrives in granite and slate-rich soils. This combination of cool climate and well-drained soils creates wines with freshness and juiciness that are ideal for modern gastronomy.
Gamay is known for being vinified with “carbonic maceration” – a technique that highlights the fresh berry aromas and makes the wines extra soft and fruit-driven. It has thin skins and therefore produces wines with a low tannin structure and moderate alcohol, making it suitable for serving slightly chilled.
Gamay is a light to medium red wine with a pronounced fruit aroma. Typical notes include red cherries, raspberries and strawberries, often with floral or herbal notes. The wines have fresh acidity and soft tannins, giving a juicy and elegant mouthfeel.
Most Gamay wines are light to medium-bodied with a ruby red color. However, they can develop more depth and complexity when they come from Cru Beaujolais areas such as Morgon, Fleurie or Moulin-à-Vent.
Ranging from the young, fruit-driven Beaujolais Nouveau to more structured wines with aging potential from the best crus, Gamay can be served slightly chilled as an aperitif or with lighter dishes – a versatile choice on the wine list.
We work with producers who grow Gamay with respect for nature – often organic or biodynamic. Many of our Gamay wines are delivered in keg or Keykegs, which preserves freshness, reduces waste and ensures a wine experience of the highest quality glass after glass.
Gamay wines retain their fruity profile and fresh acidity over time, making them ideal for serving in Keykeg. Low tannin and high drinkability ensure broad appeal and good operating economy.
Gamay is one of the most food-friendly red wine grapes. Its light body and fruity profile make it perfect for dishes where strong tannins would overpower the flavor.
Gamay is lighter, more fruit-driven and has lower tannins than most classic red wines, making it suitable for light dishes and serving slightly chilled, which is unusual for red wine.
Yes – especially Cru Beaujolais from areas like Morgon and Moulin-à-Vent can be aged for 5-10 years and develop greater complexity. However, most basic Gamay is best young and fresh.
Serve Gamay slightly chilled at 12-15°C to highlight its freshness and fruit. Its low tannin and high acidity make it pleasant even at slightly lower temperatures than other red wines.
